How to refer patients to Tranquil Wave Health.
We value collaboration with GPs in supporting patients to access timely and comprehensive psychiatric care. To ensure an efficient referral process, please review the following information before sending a referral.
What is you patient eligibility for referrals?
Before referring, please check the following:
Age: We see patients aged 18 years and above. There is no fixed upper age limit—suitability is assessed individually based on safety and telehealth appropriateness.
Location: We accept referrals Australia-wide for general psychiatric care and for ADHD, all states and territories except the Northern Territory and Tasmania.
Billing: Tranquil Wave Health is a private billing service. Patients must pay the full fee upfront and the Medicare item rebate can be claimed after their appointment. We are not a bulk-billing practice.
GP Co-prescribing: We work in partnership with referring GPs, in line with the prescribing requirements for each state.
GP Assessment or Management Plan (Medicare Item 92435 (same as item 291) for telehealth): Please ensure you specify if you are requesting this type of assessment.
How to refer a patient?
We accept referrals sent to us directly to us:
We prefer referrals sent securely via: Healthlink EDI: tranquwh; Medical-Objects or ReferralNet
By email: referrals@tranquilwavehealth.com
Directly uploaded by the patient securely during the booking process
Valid Referrals
Must contain sufficient patient medical history and presenting complaint information.
Must be addressed to 'Tranquil Wave Health' or one of our practitioners. For Medicare reasons we cannot accept referrals made out to other clinicians or service providers.
Must include a specific request for an ADHD assessment and including the pre-referral tests set out below. We do not accept referrals for ADHD assessments for the Northern Territory or Tasmania.
Incomplete or incorrectly addressed referrals will be declined and patients will not be offered an appointment (we will let you and/or the patient know if this is the case).
What pre-tests do I have to complete with my GP for my ADHD assessment referral?
We require all referrals for ADHD assessments to have the following pre-tests completed and included in the referral for an ADHD assessment, including:
ECG or electrocardiogram.
Blood pressure and heart rate.
Urine drug screen (UDS).
Pathology tests (Full blood count; liver function test; urea, electrolytes, and creatinine; and thyroid function test).
If your patient has a co-morbid substance use disorder this information is required, as an additional permit is needed from the requisite Health or responsible State/Territory department before any stimulant prescribing is allowed. Non-stimulant ADHD medications generally do not require this extra step.
Documentation outlined below.
What documentation is required for my ADHD assessment?
ADHD is a lifelong neurodevelopmental disorder that impacts attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Specific symptoms and their severity can change over time but for a diagnosis, symptoms must be present before 12 years of age. This is usually done using school reports, previous ADHD diagnosis as a child or adolescent and/or a parental letter:
Previous paediatric or psychiatric letter/report diagnosing ADHD;
A minimum of two school reports, including one prior to the age of 12 years of age; and/or
A parental letter describing school and academic performance and concerns, if any.
If never previously diagnosed with ADHD, then please complete the Diagnostic Interview for ADHD in adults or DIVA 2.0.
Please upload this documentation when booking your initial appointment or send this documentation to referrals@tranquilwavehealth.com prior to your appointment (at least 72 hours prior).
We do not facilitate or provide crisis mental health or alcohol and other drug services?
If patients seeking Tranquil Wave Health services have attempted to harm themselves, others and/or are experiencing such thoughts with the intent to carry them out, then crisis assessment and support teams are available 24 hours a day across Australia. Visit https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/mental-health-crisis-support for crisis advice and service contact details. Alternatively, call Lifeline on 13 11 14 for support.
For life-threatening emergencies we recommend dialing 000 immediately or supporting your patient to attend their nearest hospital emergency department (ED) or mental health crisis centre.
Our 'private' telehealth services are not appropriate for acute mental health conditions or severe substance use disorders. We will have to decline these referrals.
